Everything you need to know about the IELTS Exam
What exactly is the IELTS exam and why is it so important?
IELTS (International English Language Testing System) is the global standard for assessing English language proficiency. It is recognized by universities in 140 countries, the immigration services of Australia, Canada, and the United Kingdom, as well as thousands of employers globally. The exam measures your skills in four areas: listening, reading, writing, and speaking. It is not a test of theoretical knowledge—it is an assessment of your real ability to communicate in an academic or professional environment.

IELTS Exam Structure and Duration of Each Section
The Listening section has four parts of gradually increasing difficulty: a conversation in a social context, a monologue on an everyday topic, a conversation in an academic setting, and an academic lecture or monologue. Questions include gap-filling, multiple-choice, and matching. You have an extra 10 minutes to transfer your answers to the answer sheet. The key is concentration and quick note-taking.
The Reading module (60 minutes) features three long texts with diverse questions (e.g., True/False/Not Given, matching). Academic texts are from scholarly sources, while General Training texts are from everyday life. Since reading all of it is not feasible, scanning and skimming techniques are essential for success.
The Writing module (60 minutes) has two tasks: Task 1 (20 min, $\geq 150$ words) involves describing a graph/chart (Academic) or writing a letter (General Training). Task 2 (40 min, $\geq 250$ words) is an argumentative essay. Assessment criteria include task achievement, coherence, vocabulary, and grammar. Task 2 contributes more to the final score.
The Speaking test is a one-on-one conversation with an examiner lasting 11–14 minutes, divided into three parts: personal questions, a 2-minute monologue on a cue card, and a discussion on related abstract themes. You are assessed on four criteria: fluency and coherence, vocabulary, grammatical accuracy, and pronunciation. Clarity of communication, including correct use of stress and intonation, is crucial.
Registration and Exam Process -
a practical Step-by-Step Guide
How and where to register for the IELTS exam?
In Poland, IELTS is administered by the British Council and IDP in major cities: Warsaw, Krakow, Poznań, Wrocław, Gdańsk. Registration takes place online through the official organizers' websites. You will need a valid passport on the day of the exam. Prices may vary depending on the exam type and location – check the current rates on the British Council or IDP websites. Register at least 3-4 weeks before your chosen date – spots fill up quickly.
What to bring with you on exam day and what to expect?
You must bring your passport and a bottle of water without a label into the exam room. Phones, watches, jewelry – everything is left in a locker. The exam day begins with registration and having your photo taken. The Listening, Reading, and Writing sections take place one after another with short breaks. Speaking may be on the same day or within a week before/after the other modules. Examiners are professional but demanding – follow all instructions.
When and how will you receive your IELTS certificate?
Results for the computer-based exam are published in 3-5 days; for the paper-based exam – after 13 days from the test date. You check them online on the organizer's website. You will receive the physical certificate by mail or can pick it up in person at the exam center. The certificate is valid for two years from the exam date. You can order additional copies to be sent directly to universities or immigration offices.
What to do if your exam result is unsatisfactory?
You have two options: appeal the result through Enquiry on Results (EOR) or retake the exam. EOR is an appeal available within 6 weeks of the test date – your work will be re-marked by other examiners. The process takes 2-21 days. The fee is refunded if any score increases. Retaking the exam is possible without limits, but we recommend a break for additional preparation. Most students improve their score on the second attempt if they have systematically worked on their weak areas.
Frequently asked questions about the IELTS Course
Everything you need to know about our education
What is the difference between your course and self-study?
The course provides you with what self-study cannot offer: structure, expert feedback, and group motivation. You receive materials precisely tailored to the IELTS exam, not general textbooks. Every piece of your written work and every Speaking simulation undergoes a detailed instructor analysis. Regular mock tests conducted under exam conditions prepare you psychologically. It is difficult to identify your own mistakes on your own—we do that for you.
What is the minimum English level required to start the online IELTS preparation course?
We recommend a minimum level of B1/B2. Below this level, it is better to first strengthen your general language proficiency. We will verify your level with an entrance test before the course—this helps us personalize the teaching process. If the level is lower, we recommend an intensive general English course.
Are your educational materials included in the course price?
Yes, the price of 3800 PLN includes all materials: textbooks, mock tests, access to the online platform with additional exercises and recordings. There are no hidden costs. You only pay for the course and separately for the exam at an official center. The materials remain with you forever—you can return to them even after the course ends.
How long does it typically take to prepare for the IELTS exam with your course?
Our course lasts three months—72 academic hours in mini-groups. This is the optimal time for most students at level B2 who aim for a score of 6.5–7.5. Outside of class, we recommend an additional 5–7 hours per week for independent homework and practice. The time depends on your starting level and goal: a jump from B1 to 7.0 requires more time than from B2 to 6.5.
What is the most difficult part of the IELTS exam and how to deal with it?
For most students, the most difficult parts are Writing and Speaking. Writing requires not only language knowledge but also a logical structure, coherence of arguments, and rich academic vocabulary. Speaking is stressful because it is a face-to-face conversation with the examiner. Our course focuses precisely on these sections: you receive proven templates for essays, regular writing practice with feedback, and weekly exam interview simulations.
What are the most common mistakes made by test-takers?
- Poor time management — spending too many minutes on one task at the expense of others.
- Not adhering to the word count in Writing (minimum 150 and 250).
- Using memorized answers in Speaking — examiners recognize this.
- Ignoring instructions in Listening (“NO MORE THAN THREE WORDS”).
- Lack of examples in essays — generalizations alone are not enough.
Our course teaches you how to avoid these traps through systematic practice and regular feedback.
